What actually gets more impressions on X (Twitter)?
Short answer
Less than most advice suggests. We ran 885 tests on reach across 13 accounts, one per kind of post and account, and 148 passed the test against chance (17%). The patterns that held in several accounts: posts that share the creator's own numbers (reliably higher reach in 4 of 8 accounts, median +53%), posts that talk to a group (4 of 10 accounts, +16%) and posts that invite a reply (4 of 13 accounts, +19%). Posts that ask for nothing were reliably lower in 5 of 13 accounts, reactions to news in 3 of 7 accounts.
What went with more reach
Reach here is the number of views X counts for a post, set against the median of the 30 posts the same account published closest in time, so a good month does not make a kind of post look good. Own numbers means a status or recap with figures the creator measured: followers, views, revenue, users. Any post that carries such a number, whatever its type, went with higher reach in 3 of 11 accounts.

Hashtags, links and images
Hashtags were too rare to compare across accounts: 146 posts, in the 4 accounts that used them on 8 or more posts. The set also does not reliably tell a link from an attached image, so this research says nothing about either. Topics are left out on purpose: they are too different from one account to the next to be compared.
What to do with this
Share what you measured, say who the post is for, and ask the readers something. Beyond that, most of the swing in reach from one post to the next is not explained by the kind of post, and a single post that did well proves little. What holds for your account shows in a test over your own posts; the example report shows what that looks like, and the method page how it works.
What this sample is, and what it is not
13 public creator accounts on X, chosen by us, mostly in tech, AI and indie building, with 62 to 3,735 followers (median 1,424). For each we took the newest original posts up to 500 (114 to 499 per account), published between 2 Jan 2026 and 14 Sept 2026, with their public reach, bookmarks and replies. Replies to other posts are left out.
Every account was measured only against its own posts, so a large account cannot outvote a small one. “Reliably higher in 5 of 12 accounts” means the gap passed that account's own test against chance in 5 of the 12 accounts that had enough posts in the group. It is a pattern in these accounts, not a law of X, and it does not prove that the kind of post causes the gap.
Your posts are not the median
The same test runs on your own posts: the free plan reads your latest 50 through the official X API, read-only, and shows whether these groups hold up for you; the Deep Check names every one. About 2 minutes, no payment details.

Questions
How do I get more impressions on X?
In these accounts, few things made a reliable difference. The ones that held in several accounts: sharing your own numbers (higher reach in 4 of 8 accounts, median +53%), talking to a group (4 of 10 accounts) and inviting a reply (4 of 13 accounts).
Do hashtags increase reach on X?
This set cannot say. Only 4 of 13 accounts used hashtags on 8 or more posts, 146 posts in total, too few to compare across accounts.
Do news reactions get more reach on X?
Not in these accounts. Posts reacting to news were reliably lower for reach in 3 of 7 accounts and reliably higher in none, with a median gap of −21%.
Why does my reach change so much from post to post?
Most of it is not explained by the kind of post. Of 885 tests on reach here, 148 passed the test against chance, so for most kinds of post the difference to the account's other posts was no larger than chance often produces.
