How long should a post on X (Twitter) be?

Updated 29 Sept 2026 · 3,762 posts from 13 creator accounts, each measured against itself · How we measured

Short answer

Length changes what a post gets, not how far it travels. For reach, no length band was reliably better or worse in more than 2 of 13 accounts, and the median account saw every band between −5% and +7% of its other posts. For bookmarks, posts over 280 characters did better in 5 of 12 accounts and posts up to 100 characters worse in 3 of 12 accounts. For replies, what counted was the first line: 60 characters or less did better in 6 of 13 accounts and worse in none.

Length in characters

Every account in the set had enough posts in each band to test it against its own other posts, so each row stands on all 13 accounts or close to it.

Each band against the same account's other posts. The gap is the median over the accounts; up / down counts the accounts where the gap passed the test.

Line breaks

The same picture by shape: four or more lines went with more bookmarks, a one-liner with fewer (more in what gets bookmarked).

Each format against the same account's other posts.

The first line

The first line is the text up to the first line break, the part a reader sees before deciding to read on. Short first lines went with more replies; for reach, the gap was small either way.

What to do with this

Pick the length for the job. A post meant to be saved can run long and carry steps or numbers; a post meant for replies works with a short first line. Do not cut a post short in the hope of more reach: in this set, length made little reliable difference to it.

What this sample is, and what it is not

13 public creator accounts on X, chosen by us, mostly in tech, AI and indie building, with 62 to 3,735 followers (median 1,424). For each we took the newest original posts up to 500 (114 to 499 per account), published between 2 Jan 2026 and 14 Sept 2026, with their public reach, bookmarks and replies. Replies to other posts are left out.

Every account was measured only against its own posts, so a large account cannot outvote a small one. “Reliably higher in 5 of 12 accounts” means the gap passed that account's own test against chance in 5 of the 12 accounts that had enough posts in the group. It is a pattern in these accounts, not a law of X, and it does not prove that the kind of post causes the gap.

Your posts are not the median

The same test runs on your own posts: the free plan reads your latest 50 through the official X API, read-only, and shows whether these groups hold up for you; the Deep Check names every one. About 2 minutes, no payment details.

Questions

What is the ideal length for a post on X?

There is no single one, because length changes what a post gets rather than how far it travels. Longer than 280 characters went with more bookmarks in 5 of 12 accounts; a first line of 60 characters or less went with more replies in 6 of 13 accounts. For reach no length band held up in more than 2 of 13 accounts.

Do long posts get less reach on X?

Not in these accounts. Posts longer than 280 characters were reliably higher for reach in 2 and reliably lower in 2 of 13 accounts, with a median gap of +7%.

Does the first line matter on X?

For replies it does. A first line of 60 characters or less before the first line break went with more replies in 6 of 13 accounts and fewer in none; a first line longer than 120 characters went with fewer in 2 of 9 accounts.
