Every day

Reach comes from what you do around a post as much as from the post.

  1. 1

    Post, then reply a lot

On the days you post, write replies under other posts in your topic, and plenty of them.

Case study, @lucas_builds: on days with 26+ replies, posts reached a median of 556 impressions, on the other days 357.

Works for you1.6×Your reach on days with 26+ of your replies (median 556 against 357; 40 and 29 posts).
  2. 2

    Stay for the first hour

Keep the hour after a post free and answer every reply in your thread, ideally with a question back.

Case study, @lucas_builds: posts answered within 60 minutes reached 582 against 343, with 10 replies instead of 4.

Works for you1.7×Your reach on posts you answered within the hour (median 582 against 343; 31 and 44 posts).

Your replies

Two jobs: replies under big accounts are read by strangers, replies under small accounts start conversations.

  1. 3

Reply under big accounts for reach

A few replies a day under accounts with 100k+ followers, early, with your own fact or a real counter-position.

Case study, @lucas_builds: replies there reached a median of 217 impressions, under accounts below 1k 11.

  2. 4

Reply under small accounts for conversations

Most of your replies under accounts your size in your topic. They answer back, and that is where conversations and mutuals start.

Case study, @lucas_builds: accounts under 1k answered 58% of the replies, 100k+ accounts 17%.

Works for you57%of your replies under accounts below 10k got an answer, against 17% under 100k+ accounts (370 and 48 replies).
  3. 5

End your replies with a question

One question on the author's point in the last line. No one-word replies.

Case study, @lucas_builds: 56% of replies with a closing question got an answer, 42% without.

Works for you74%of your replies with a closing question got an answer, against 59% without (34 and 100 replies).

Your posts

What the research found across creator accounts, each measured against itself.

  1. 6

    Ask your readers something

An open question, two options to pick from, or a request to share their own. Do not answer it yourself.

Research: posts that invite a reply got reliably more replies in 9 of 13 accounts, median +65%. Posts that ask for nothing were lower in 10 of 13 accounts.

Leans your way, early+38%Replies on your posts that invite a reply, against your other posts (139 posts, an early signal, not tested as clear).
  2. 7

    Keep the first line short

Sixty characters or less before the first line break.

Research: more replies in 6 of 13 accounts, median +27%.

Leans your way, early+15%Replies on your short first lines, against your other posts (85 posts, an early signal, not tested as clear).
  3. 8

    Write it plainly

Words a newcomer to your topic knows. Details go in the reply, not in the hook.

Research: a plain tone got more replies in 5 of 13 accounts, median +47%.

Leans your way, early+28%Replies on your plain posts, against your other posts (117 posts, an early signal, not tested as clear).
  4. 9
